Nepal

Nepal is a country of adventure, spirituality and breathtaking natural beauty. Yet around 10% of its population does not have access to electricity. Our pilot project is changing that. Based in the western Karnali Province of the country, it will provide power to over 100 families currently living off-grid.

  • 100kW HKS generation facility
  • Dedicated mini-grid infrastructure
  • 100+ households and two schools
Overview

Part-funded by an Innovate UK Energy Catalyst grant, our pilot HKS project in western Nepal will bring meaningful change to the lives of over one hundred families living across two remote, off-grid communities.

The project will deliver a 100kW HKS.r platform alongside a complete mini-grid electrical system to bring renewable power to these villages, helping to drive education, healthcare and industry in the region.

The project will make a transformative difference to the villagers, and will provide the pathway for follow-on HKS projects across the country, helping to address the 2.9 million people in Nepal currently living in energy poverty.

Real change

Alongside the practical delivery of electrical infrastructure, the project is also undertaking in-depth local engagement to ensure that the people who are gaining access to electricity for the first time understand all the opportunities that it will provide.

This includes:

  • An irrigation system to enable local crop growth
  • Power to two local rice mills
  • In-house lighting and internet access to enable education
  • Electrical cooking solutions to decrease reliance on open fires
The project in numbers

The project will deliver:

  • 1 x 100HKS.r Platform
  • 7km electrical transmission cabling
  • 2km electrical distribution cabling

Powering:

  • 100+ households
  • 2 schools
  • 1 healthcare facility
  • 10+ small businesses
