HKS Technology
The benchmark in water power technology
Our patented HKS (hydrokinetic + solar) technology comprises a floating platform that supports one-or-more submerged water turbines, with additional solar generation above water. Energy generation comes from the hydrokinetic energy capture from flowing water, while the solar panels supply around 10% of all electrical output.
With designs based on real-world experience in the offshore oil and gas industry, our HKS technology is robust in harsh marine environments, yet simple to operate and maintain. Coupled with a highly-efficient turbine configuration, these critical factors ensure an extremely low energy production cost.
Designed for outputs of 10kW to 500kW, the HKS.r system can be configured to produce power for small, individual energy users or deployed in multi-unit arrays to supply large-scale off-takers. The HKS.r turbines provide high levels of torque, enabling them to energise in river flows as low as 1m/s. The turbine configuration also enables deployments in shallow water depths of just 3.5m. Its modular construction is undertaken in-country, making it easy to transport to remote locations.
Each HKS.t platform is designed for a peak power output of 1MW in tidal flows of 2.5m/s (5 knots). Array deployment enables multi-platform offshore energy farms to supply grid power networks or large commercial power users. HKS.t is configured to make offshore maintenance simple, with all electrical components housed above water and easily accessible. All platforms can be maintained using readily available offshore support vessels. Construction and equipment is UK-based.
HKS technology is built around Vertical Axis Turbines (VATs) to capture water flow. For marine environments, VATs have many advantages over “windmill” type Horizontal Axis Turbines, including platform design that keeps all electrical equipment out of the water.
This means fewer electrical equipment failures during the platform life, as well as making electrical servicing and repair easier and faster, to reduce operational costs. VATs also operate with lower rotation speeds, ensuring that they are fish and wildlife friendly.
A consistently available natural energy resource enables HKS to generate 100% carbon-free electricity and provide completely predictable clean power.
Consistent power production, coupled with optimised construction processes and off-the-shelf equipment means that HKS has a low Levelised Cost of Electricity (LCOE).
Hydrokinetic means no dams and no alteration to river geologies. Slow blade-speed turbines ensure that there is no negative impact on marine life.
HKS platforms range in size from 10kW to 1MW, and can be deployed as single units or in large energy farm arrays to produce power at a complete range of scales.
Constructed from durable marine-grade materials, and designed to have no electrical equipment below the water line, each HKS platform has a lifetime of 25-years.
With no large infrastructure needed, single unit projects can be constructed and deployed in as little as one year, ensuring unrivalled water-to-wire delivery schedules.
